Brazil presents initiatives to combat desertification in Africa

FORTALEZA, Brazil, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Brazilian representatives introduced to Nigerian officials initiatives to combat desertification in the African country at the second International Conference on Semi-Arid Regions here on Thursday.

Actions to deal with problems in the semiarid regions were developed with a program of the Brazilian government that provided 300,000 cisterns to supply the population during drought, said Egon Krakhecke, secretary for sustainable rural development, of the Ministry of the Environment.

The experience could provide a solution to the pressing problem that African semi-arid areas face, since two thirds of the territory of that continent is composed of deserts or dry lands.

Krakhecke emphasized that the cistern project is implemented by civil society with government support, specifically in the northeastern region where the rural population has historically suffered drought.

The program serves more isolated communities, bringing water through a canal system mounted on top of houses for a catch tank with a capacity of 16,000 liters, and has been considered a great success in improving the quality of life of those residents.

For his part, Niger's Water Resources Minister Abdou Kaza said 77 percent of the country's territory became desert, suffering long periods of drought and violent rains that cause devastation and destroying plantations.

The two sides agreed to establish mechanisms for cooperation to reduce desertification in Niger.
