MOSCOW, June 26 (Xinhua) -- A police operation conducted in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Dagestan Saturday has killed a militant leader, local media reported. "The militant, killed in a special operation in Dagestani Karabudakhkent district, has been identified as Djamalutdin Djavatov, leader of the Karamakhin terrorist group," said deputy interior minister of the republic Magomed Ismailov. Restrictions in the district associated with the counter-terrorist operation were lifted at 2:30 p.m. Moscow time (1030 GMT) the same day. Djavatov had allegedly orchestrated an attack on a police patrol on Thursday, killing two police officers. In another North Caucasus republic, Ingushetia, a police officer was killed by a car bomb at 09:00 a.m. Moscow time (0500 GMT) on Saturday in the town of Malgobek. Violence is common in Russia's mainly Muslim North Caucasus republics, especially Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia, with militants frequently targeting police and officials as representatives of Russian authorities. Moscow recently made economic improvements in the region to prevent locals from joining terrorists. The Kremlin has vowed to tackle the problems of unemployment, clan rivalry and corruption in the region, which are viewed as reasons for violence there.
