RIO DE JANEIRO, June 2 (Xinhua) -- Former Brazilian international forward Adriano Leite Ribeiro was alleged to be linked to a drug-dealing gang and was questioned by authorities in Rio.
Adriano, who failed to find a place in the Brazil squad for the coming 2010 World Cup, is suspected of being involved in financial dealings with members of a drugs gang.
Brazilian prosecutors said Wednesday there were "strong indications" football star Adriano transferred a large sum of money to a notorious drug lord held responsible for the downing of a police helicopter last year.
The 28-year-old striker has denied any wrongdoing and has not been charged with any crimes, and it was not clear what charges he could possibly face.
The once Parma and Inter Milan forward, who has battled problems with alcohol and depression, is now playing for Brazilian side Flamengo and is linked with a Roma move next season.
