According to Taipei City health officials, the Japanese athlete has only shown mild symptoms of the H1N1 flu strain, more commonly known as swine flu.
"The football player developed a sore throat and fever Monday evening, " said Chiu Wen-hsiang, director of the city government's Department of Health.
Accompanied by the team's physician, the player went to a medical center to receive treatment.
"He tested positive for swine flu, but his case was mild, " Chiu said, adding that the athlete does not need to be hospitalized and just has to rest in his hotel and monitor his own health.
Chiu said the team's doctor has advised the player not to take part in future games and that health authorities will keep close tabs on the health situation of other team members.
"So far, none of other Japanese team members have fevers or other flu-like symptoms," Chiu added.
Meanwhile, four more local swine flu patients have been hospitalized, bringing to 149 the total number of hospitalized cases recorded in Taiwan since the outbreak began, according to the latest tallies released by the Central Epidemics Command Center Tuesday.
So far, eight of those patients have died, while 99 have recovered, the center said.
According to the center, the near doubling of hospitalized cases over the past week indicates that the outbreak is growing, a trend driven by the start of the new school year.
