CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — A report says Aborigines suffer far
higher rates of sexually transmitted diseases than other Australians
despite being targeted by safe sex initiatives.
University of New South Wales' Kirby Institute told a sexual health conference in Canberra on Tuesday that Aborigines were diagnosed with gonorrhea at a rate almost 27 times higher than the wider Australian community.
The diagnosis rate of infectious syphilis was five times higher among Aborigines than other Australians and chlamydia was more than three times higher.
James Ward of the Kirby Institute says factors to blame include a lack of a coordinated health campaign in the Outback, ignorance about diseases and the relatively young indigenous population.
