In commentary Monday, North Korea's state-run Korean Central News Agency said the East Sea was the traditional name for the easternmost body of water during the Joseon Dynasty, and demanded that Japan stop what it called a "despicable distortion of historical place names."
The agency added that Japan must earnestly express regret and apologize for its past atrocities.
Old maps from 19th century Japan were presented as evidence, on which the East Sea is marked as the "Joseon Sea."
