Inter Milan have confirmed that they have sent an official £20 million offer to Liverpool for midfielder Javier Mascherano.
Barcelona are also interested in a move for the Argentina international, who has said that he is looking to leave the club this summer.
Inter sporting director Marco Branca has announced that his club have formally moved for Mascherano, and are just waiting to see if the Reds will accept their offer.
"I sent an offer to Liverpool by fax on Tuesday and am waiting for a reply from them,” Branca told The Sun.
"We're not speaking to the player at the moment because we want to do this in the right way and make sure that Liverpool are happy.
"Everybody knows that Mascherano would like to change team and to change country. He also has a good relationship with our manager Rafa Benitez.
"We've made a very good offer, around the amount they are asking for. We have a strong team here, the best in Europe, but we would like to add one or two players to make us even stronger."
Barcelona have also made a bid for the Argentine, but their £12 million offer is well short of what Liverpool were looking to receive for Mascherano.
Mascherano was kept out of the team that lost to Manchester City 3-0 on Monday night, and will also not take part in Liverpool’s Europa League match against Trabzonspor on Thursday, with Reds manager Roy Hodgson not wanted to ruin any possible transfer move that the Argentine makes in the near future.
