KABUL, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Rockets fired by militants hit Kandahar airfield the main base of NATO-led troops in south Afghanistan wounding several persons, a statement of the alliance received Sunday said. Kandahar airfield has been serving as the largest base of NATO- led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Taliban birthplace Kandahar and adjoining provinces of Helmand, Zabul and Uruzgan. "A number of ISAF personnel and civilian workers have been injured and are receiving medical treatment. There are no confirmed fatalities," the statement added. It also confirmed that five rockets were fired at around 8:00 p. m. local time on Saturday but no insurgents penetrated the base perimeter. Earlier on Saturday night, an Afghan civilian employee of the base Sattar Khan told Xinhua that one of the rockets hit the parking lot of helicopters. This is the second attack by militants on NATO's military base over the past one week. In the previous attack, the militants raided U.S. largest military base in Bagram airfield 50 km north of Kabul killing one U.S. contractor and injuring nine army service members while 12 suicide bombers were killed in the dreadful offensive.
