The conservative Chilean newspaper El Mercurio highlighted in its editorial, "the critical moment faced by a country that could be well off," referring to Venezuela.

In an editorial entitled "Chávez in trouble," the Chilean newspaper with the largest circulation, highlights the serious problems of inflation, shortage of food and power crisis in Venezuela, despite the "substantial oil revenues" that the Venezuelan government has had. It concludes that President Hugo Chávez "is an all-powerful government, although popular discontent is growing."

"In any case, on the eve of the 21st century, some Latin American countries are making the same economic mistakes, with the same flawed arguments that the leaders of the region invoked in the mid 20th century, in areas that have been overcome by theory and practice," El Mercurio said.
