Amazon cuts price of e-book reader Kindle

(Xinhua/Reuters File Photo) SAN FRANCISCO, June 21 (Xinhua) -- Online retail giant Amazon.com on Monday joined the price war of electronic book (e-book) readers, saying it is cutting the price of its popular Kindle by more than a quarter. The Kindle is available for immediate shipment at the new price of 189 U.S. dollars, down from the previous 259 dollars, Amazon said in a statement. Amazon added that it will continue to offer free 3G connectivity for Kindle with no monthly fees or annual contracts. Amazon's move came hours after Barnes & Noble, the largest bookseller in the United States, slashed the price of its 3G Nook e-book reader from 259 dollars to 199 dollars. Barnes & Noble on Monday also introduced a Wi-Fi version of Nook which is priced at 149 dollars. Amazon sells another high-end e-book reader called Kindle DX, whose price has remained unchanged at 489 dollars since it was unveiled in May 2009.
