Photographer Tim Hetherington, co-director of the Oscar-nominated war documentary "Restrepo," was killed while covering the fighting in Libya on Wednesday, two representatives confirmed to WNYC.
"We are saddened beyond words that our friend, photographer and filmmaker Tim Hetherington was killed in Misurata this morning," said Cathy Saypol, Hetherington's manager.
The news was first reported by fellow photographer Andre Liohn, who is in Libya and wrote on his Facebook on Wednesday that Hetherington was killed "when covering the front line."
A day earlier, Hetherington tweeted: "In besieged Libyan city of Misrata. Indiscriminate shelling by Qaddafi forces. No sign of NATO."
Hetherington, 41, a contributing photographer for Vanity Fair, co-directed the critically acclaimed "Restrepo" with Sebastian Junger. The film follows the deployment of American soldiers to one of the most dangerous outposts in Afghanistan.
