Homeland Security Sued Over Proposed Facebook, Twitter Monitoring

Group claims DHS will be looking for suspicious words on social media sites.

The Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC), has filed suit in US District Court against the Department of Homeland Security. The grounds for the suit is a refusal by DHS to reply to a Freedom of Information Act request filed by EPIC in April of this year.
According to EPIC’s press release, the center of the issue is a plan by DHS to create fake accounts on social networking sites and use those accounts to monitor the networks for certain key words – such as “drill,” “infection,” “strain,” “virus,” “trojan,” and others. The complaint was filed in the District of Columbia, and asks the court to compel DHS to process EPIC’s FOIA request, as well as to order DHS to produce the records EPIC has requested, to acknowledge EPIC as news media, and to pay EPIC’s legal bills for the suit.
The impetus for EPIC’s request was an announcement by DHS that it planned to implement a Social Media Monitoring and Situation Awareness Initiative, whereby it would monitor social media sites in order to gain realtime information on events. The DHS announcement states that the goal of the initiative is not to collect personally identifiable information except in extreme cases – e.g., a person trapped in rubble with their mobile phone who is posting their status (as happened during the Japanese tsunami).
Though at first glance – and thanks in no small part to EPIC’s description of it – the DHS program sounds awfully “Big Brother.” Upon closer reading of DHS’s actual statement, though, it seems that the goal of the program is to monitor developing situations in realtime, rather than to monitor individuals for subversive behavior.

Irã diz ter filmado e fotografado um porta-aviões americano no Golfo Pérsico

Teerã, 29 dez (EFE).- O Irã filmou e tirou fotos nesta quinta-feira de um porta-aviões americano que saía do Golfo Pérsico e entrava no mar de Omã, segundo informou a agência oficial de notícias iraniana, 'Irna'.
O porta-voz das manobras denominadas 'Velayat 90', o almirante Mahmoud Moussavi, disse que um avião de patrulha naval na região onde estão as forças iranianas identificou o porta-aviões, 'tirou fotos e filmou'.
'Este tema mostra que a Marinha conseguiu ter a região sob controle e observar com totalidade qualquer tipo de movimento e ação na área', afirmou o responsável.
Moussavi também explicou que as embarcações estrangeiras entraram no mar de Omã de acordo com as leis internacionais.
Na área onde as forças iranianas estão realizando manobras, as embarcações estrangeiras não entram, mas caso tenham acesso serão advertidas pela Marinha do Irã.
No dia 26 de dezembro, um helicóptero estrangeiro se aproximou do território onde são realizadas as manobras e após uma advertência da Marinha abandonou a área, disse Moussavi.
A Marinha iraniana começou no sábado suas manobras navais 'Velayat 90', que serão prolongadas até 3 de janeiro nas águas do sul do país entre o Estreito de Ormuz e o Oceano Índico.
Nestas manobras, vão empregar armamento de última geração, incluindo diferentes tipos de mísseis ligeiros e pesados, navios de guerra, submarinos de classes distintas, aviões não tripulados e armamento de defesa litorânea terra-mar.
O Irã se encontra no meio de uma polêmica por seu programa nuclear, que parte da comunidade internacional, com os Estados Unidos na frente, acredita que tem uma vertente militar destinada a fabricar bombas atômicas, algo que Teerã nega e afirma que é exclusivamente civil e tem objetivos pacíficos.
Neste contexto, personalidades dos EUA e Israel ameaçaram o Irã com ataques para evitar o desenvolvimento de seu programa nuclear, ao que Teerã contestou que daria uma resposta 'arrasadora'.
Além de eventuais ataques contra o território de Israel e as bases e navios dos EUA na região, o Irã disse que se sofrer uma agressão ou se sentir em perigo iminente, fecharia o Estreito de Ormuz, o que poderia gerar um desabastecimento de petróleo no mundo de consequências imprevisíveis. EFE

Sites usam código escondido para encontrar câmeras roubadas na web

Quem teve sua câmara digital roubada pode ter boas chances de encontrá-la graças a serviços de rastreamento oferecidos na internet.
Dois sites oferecem o serviço, o britânico stolencamerafinder e o americano CameraTrace. Ambos se aproveitam de um código embedado nas fotos tiradas por câmaras digitais - ou pelo menos pela grande maioria delas.
Esse código, conhecido como EXIF data, traz informações como marca, modelo e número de série da máquina.
Os sites são capazes de rastrear fotos tiradas pelas câmeras roubadas que foram postadas na internet, seja onde for - em sites como Facebook ou Flickr, por exemplo.
Quando fotos tiradas com máquinas roubadas são detectadas, o cliente recebe os detalhes e pode acionar a polícia.
Rastreamento
Foi assim que o fotógrafo americano John Heller, da Getty Images, conseguiu recuperar seu equipamento digital, avaliado em US$ 9 mil, roubado em um centro cultural em Hollywood, em 2010.
Quase um ano depois do roubo, Heller, através do CameraTrace, encontrou fotos tiradas com sua câmera, uma Nikon D3, que tinham sido postadas no Flickr.
Com ajuda da polícia, descobriu-se que as imagens foram postadas por outro fotógrafo profissional, que tinha comprado a máquina no eBay, sem saber que era roubada, e Heller conseguiu recuperar sua câmera.
História semelhante é a de Kevin Hayes, contada pelo jornal australiano Sidney Herald, que teve sua câmera roubada, uma Canon EOS 5D, quando passeava pelas ruas em Melbourne.
Ele soube do site stolencamerafinder através da dica de um internauta. Com uma foto antiga tirada com a câmara roubada foi possível fazer o registro e iniciar a busca, que acabou encontrando outras fotos tiradas com a mesma máquina em uma conta no Flickr, de um tatuador em Sydney.
As informações foram encaminhadas para polícia australiana, e Hayes recuperou a câmera.

Somali atira contra funcionários dos Médicos Sem Fronteiras

MOGADÍSCIO (Reuters) - Um somali que já trabalhou para a agência de ajuda humanitária Médicos Sem Fronteiras (MSF) matou a tiros um funcionário estrangeiro da organização e feriu um outro no escritório do grupo na capital da Somália, Mogadíscio, nesta quinta-feira, informaram a polícia e um funcionário do MSF.
O porta-voz da polícia Abdullahi Barise disse que o atirador foi levado sob custódia. Uma testemunha disse à Reuters que o homem foi retirado do edifício ainda segurando um revólver.
"O homem estava armado com um revólver e acreditamos que ele tenha brigado com o coordenador. É muito chocante", afirmou Barise. Ele disse que o atirador tinha trabalhado na equipe de logística da agência.
Um funcionário do MSF, que não quis divulgar seu nome, também disse que o atirador somali havia trabalhado para a agência de ajuda humanitária. Uma enfermeira do MSF disse que o funcionário ferido foi levado ao hospital.
O MSF disse em um comunicado: "Confirmamos que um grave incidente com tiros ocorreu no complexo do MSF em Mogadíscio. Neste momento, não temos mais informações sobre a escala e a extensão desse incidente. O MSF está fazendo todo o possível para garantir a segurança de sua equipe."

BMW negocia flexibilização do IPI para investir no Brasil

BRASÍLIA/SÃO PAULO (Reuters) - A BMW está negociando com o governo uma flexibilização do aumento do IPI cobrado de veículos importados para o caso de empresas que, como a montadora alemã, tenham interesse em instalar fábrica no Brasil.
"O pedido que é claramente feito ao governo é que existisse uma flexibilização para empresas que têm interesse em investir no Brasil", disse o presidente da BMW do Brasil, Henning Dornbusch, após reunião com a ministra-chefe da Casa Civil, Gleisi Hoffmann.
O executivo disse que a decisão da empresa de instalar uma fábrica no Brasil ainda não está tomada, mas está num patamar "forte".
A companhia estuda desde o início do ano a instalação de uma fábrica no Brasil, que será a primeira da marca na América do Sul.
Em junho antes do anúncio da mudança do IPI em setembro, o presidente da BMW Brasil, Jorg Henning Dornbusch, afirmou que os planos caminhavam na direção de uma instalação em regime SKD, em que veículos semimontados são importados e finalizados no país. Na ocasião, o executivo comentou durante entrevista à Reuters que a expectativa de crescimento nas vendas no Brasil era de 25 por cento sobre 2010, para cerca de 10 mil carros.
Se confirmada, a fábrica da BMW no Brasil virá em meio a uma série de projetos de aumento de capacidade produtiva de marcas como Fiat, GM, Ford, Renault, Nissan, JAC e Chery.
A associação brasileira de montadoras, Anfavea, estimou no início do mês que as vendas de veículos no país vão crescer entre 4 e 5 por cento em 2012, após expansão de 5 por cento este ano, para um recorde entre 3,77 milhões e 3,81 milhões de unidades.
Segundo o executivo, a expectativa era tomar a decisão da nova fábrica no Brasil em novembro, mas, com a mudança no IPI, acabou sendo postergada.

Outrage as BBC Chooses Panda as 2011 Female Face

LONDON (Reuters) - The BBC has ignited its second sexism spat in the space of a month by choosing a panda as one of its 12 female faces of the year.

Last week, it was criticised for choosing its annual BBC Sports Personality of the Year from an entirely male shortlist.

The decision to include the face of Tian Tian (Sweetie), a female panda whose arrival at Edinburgh Zoo on loan from China generated huge publicity earlier this month, has provoked a storm of angry tweets, including one from former deputy Prime Minister John Prescott.

"So the BBC couldn't find a woman for Sports Personality of the Year, but they could find a panda for a female face of 2011," he wrote.

Labour MP Stella Creasy also tweeted: "No offence to Sweetie -- sure a lovely panda and best in the class etc -- but clue is in the title 'women' not 'female of the species' of the year."

The corporation has also been criticised because a quarter of the female faces this year were chosen for their involvement in marriages.

They include Prince William's new sister-in-law Pippa Middleton, South African Charlene Wittstock who married Prince Albert of Monaco and Spanish billionaire the Duchess of Alba, 85, who tied the knot with a civil servant 24 years her junior.

Among the BBC's male faces of year were "King's Speech" actor Colin Firth, Tunisian Mohammed Bouazizi whose suicide sparked the Arab Spring revolutions and golfer Rory McIlroy who became the youngest player to win the U.S. Open.

Bob Chaundy, the freelance journalist who wrote the piece for the BBC, responded on Twitter: "I didn't choose the BBC women faces of the year subjects -- just wrote them. Two black eyes from wife though. Pandamonium!"

The BBC pointed out this was not the first time an animal had appeared in its Faces of the Year lists.

"Including Sweetie (Tian Tian) as one of the annual headline makers was a light-hearted addition to the list, and this isn't the first time it has featured a non-human," it said in a statement.

"In 2009, Benson the Carp, a much-caught giant fish, was August's entry on the male list and last year Peppa the Pig was on the female list for April."

Medical examiner in Casey Anthony case speaks out

It's been almost six months since a Florida jury found Casey Anthony not guilty of murder in the 2008 death of her 2-year-old daughter Caylee. Since then, the court of public opinion has continued to question the verdict and the case the prosecution presented.
One very important person involved in that case was Dr. Jan Garavaglia, or Dr. G, as she's known to fans of her TLC series "Dr. G: Medical Examiner." Six months after the disappearance of Caylee, with only skeletonized remains, hair, duct tape and a few weathered objects to work with, Garavaglia concluded that "the cause of death will be listed as homicide by undetermined means."
It was Garavaglia's determination that allowed prosecutors to move forward and charge Anthony with murder, but many believe the "undetermined means" part of that also allowed the jury to return a verdict of not guilty.
According to NBC news correspondent Kerry Sanders, that may be because of what's called the "CSI"-factor, "an expectation among jurors today that a medical examiner will present high-tech, flashy, convincing forensic evidence."
But in an upcoming TLC special, Dr. G will try to piece the forensic case back together and explain why the jury dismissed some of her findings. She'll also fire back at a defense expert who, during the trial, took the stand and referred to the autopsy she performed as "shoddy."
"My job is not to determine who did it," Garavaglia explained during a Thursday morning interview on TODAY. "My job is to determine what happened. So I feel very strongly that we could say this was a homicide — death by the hands of another. My job is not to point the finger at one person or another."
But now that her job on the case is over, she is able to share her personal perspective on that.
"Well, obviously we always have to look at the last person who was seen with the child — the person who is legally, morally, ethically responsible for the child," she said, alluding to Caylee's mother. "What stories do they give? What happened? We never did get anything from (Casey) on what happened. Yet we found (Caylee) with duct tape, discarded in the woods. That tells a lot."
In her television special, Garavaglia intends to make the point that there simply wasn't more that the forensic evidence could have revealed.
"These were very dry bones," she explained. "Information that's coming out makes it seem like we could do this test or that test or that we could expect DNA. You wouldn't expect that. These are bones that don't have anything left on them."
Which is why, ultimately, she believes "we'll never know what happened until the perpetrator states what happened."
As for the information she'll present on "Dr G: Inside the Caylee Anthony Case," which airs Sunday night on TLC, Garavaglia wants to make one thing clear: she's simply providing information about the case, not profiting from it.
"First of all, I'm not making a penny off of it," she insisted. "I never wanted to. Anything I make from that show, because it's part of my regular series, will go to children's charities. I really just did it to get away from the hype and be able to explain why you could say that the duct tape was there in less than just little sound bites."

BRASILEIROS pagarão bilhões por auxílio-moradia retroativo de magistrados

O pagamento retroativo do auxílio-moradia a magistrados, que estão sob inspeção e agora geram polêmica, obrigou a União a desembolsar alguns bilhões, informa a coluna Mônica Bergamo publicada na Folha desta quinta-feira (a íntegra está disponível para assinantes do jornal e do UOL, empresa controlada pelo Grupo Folha, que edita a Folha).
Só para a Justiça trabalhista, em 2008, quando começaram a ser pagos, eles foram calculados em R$ 1 bilhão. O auxílio foi concedido até para quem morava na cidade em que trabalhava.

Na semana passada, reportagem da Folha mostrou que nove dos 33 ministros do Superior Tribunal de Justiça receberam de uma vez só neste ano pagamentos de auxílio-moradia atrasados dos anos 1990. Os valores, somados, superam R$ 2 milhões. É o mesmo benefício recebido pelo presidente do STF (Supremo Tribunal Federal), Cezar Peluso, e pelo ministro Ricardo Lewandowski.
O direito foi reconhecido em 2000, quando o STF decidiu que todos os magistrados do país deveriam ter ganho aquilo que, durante alguns anos da década de 1990, foi pago apenas aos congressistas.
Na quarta-feira, Peluso, saiu em defesa de Lewandowski, que durante a semana paralisou inspeções do CNJ (Conselho Nacional de Justiça) sobre pagamentos milionários feitos por tribunais estaduais a magistrados.

Festa da virada em Brasília custará R$ 2,3 milhões...

Brasília – A dois dias para a virada do ano, a festa com direito a shows na Esplanada dos Ministérios foi confirmada hoje (29) pela Secretaria de Cultura. A demora foi gerada pelas complicações envolvendo a licitação para a contratação dos serviços do evento. O Governo do Distrito Federal (GDF) garantiu que o réveillon - com queima de fogos, espetáculos nacionais e locais – ocorrerá normalmente, segundo a organização, a partir das 20 horas do dia 31.
A subsecretária de Políticas e Promoções Culturais da Secretaria de Cultura, Fátima de Deus, disse à Agência Brasil que o evento deste ano vai custar aos cofres públicos aproximadamente de R$ 2,3 milhões. Segundo ela,  os recursos foram usados para a montagem da estrutura (R$ 1,4 milhão) e o pagamento dos artistas (R$ 890 mil). “Todos os setores do governo se uniram para que o evento [da virada do ano] seja um sucesso.”
A organização programou shows de cinco atrações nacionais – Móveis Coloniais de Acaju, Natiruts, Arlindo Cruz e duplas sertanejas João Bosco e Vinícius e Pedro Paulo e Matheus – e a queima de fogos com  duração aproximada de 25 minutos. No ano passado, o Distrito Federal enfrentava uma de suas piores crises políticas e não houve queima de fogos nas festas de Ano Novo. À época, o governo justificou alegando problemas na licitação que garantia a contratação da estrutura para a apresentação.
De acordo com a subsecretária, serão montadas tendas de apoio da Polícia Civil, do Corpo de Bombeiros, da Defesa Civil, da Vara da Infância e Juventude, da Secretaria de Saúde, do Serviço de Atendimento Médico de Urgência (Samu), um Posto Médico, da Companhia Elétrica de Brasília (CEB), da Companhia de Saneamento Ambiental do Distrito Federal (Caesb) e da Agência de Fiscalização do Distrito Federal (Agefis).
No dia 31, a Polícia Militar (PM) instalará dez torres de monitoramento e haverá um esquema especial de vigilância para garantir a segurança da festa. O Departamento de Trânsito do Distrito Federal (Detran) também montou um esquema especial na Esplanada dos Ministérios com nove viaturas, 16 agentes de trânsito e dois guinchos. Os sistemas de transporte urbano e o metrô funcionarão, de acordo com os cronogramas de fim de semana, sem preços e horários especiais.
Aqueles que forem para a festa na Esplanada dos Ministérios no dia 31 terão à disposição 160 banheiros químicos e quatro tendas de abrigo que se destinam a mulheres com  crianças de colo, idosos e pessoas com deficiência. A Companhia Urbanizadora da Nova Capital do Brasil (Novacap) decidiu ainda inovar neste ano, construindo passagens para os pedestres no gramado que fica no centro da Esplanada dos Ministérios.

Embora Jader Barbalho tenha renunciado ao mandado para escapar de um processo de cassação, o senador não foi alcançado pela Lei da Ficha Limpa, pois o STF o julgou apto a desempenhar o mandato para que foi eleito. O pacote de bondade que é dado a um senador deixa qualquer cidadão estupefato. Salário de R$ 26.723,13 mais auxílio-moradia de R$ 3,8 mil caso não ocupe imóvel funcional, plano de saúde... Não há limite para despesas médicas dos senadores em exercício de mandato. O atendimento beneficia o parlamentar, cônjuge e dependentes com até 21 anos, ou até 24, caso sejam universitários. O limite anual para despesas odontológicas e psicoterápicas é de R$ 25.998,96. Verba indenizatória, R$ 15 mil, Cinco passagens aéreas mensais de ida e volta para a capital do Estado de origem, Cotas: gráfica, R$ 8,5 mil; telefone, R$ 500 mensais para o telefone fixo. No caso de líder partidário e integrantes da Mesa, o valor é de R$ 1 mil. As despesas com o uso de telefone residencial podem ser ressarcidas com base nos mesmos valores. Não há limites para gastos com telefone celular. Combustível, 25 litros de gasolina ou 36 litros de álcool por dia, de segunda a sexta-feira, durante a permanência em Brasília. Cada senador tem direito ao uso de um veículo oficial em Brasília. Diante desse acinte, já passou da hora de o eleitor acordar e aprender a votar em quem realmente merece e tem a ficha limpa, pois esperar pela Justiça é perder as esperanças. Brasil, um país de tolos.

A Montana woman has gotten back her long-lost engagement ring, 36 years after it first went missing.

Terry and Donna Claver had been out only three times when they decided to get married back in 1973. The pair picked out a sapphire engagement ring with a gold band, the best they could afford at the time.
About a year and a half later, a heavily pregnant Donna put the ring on the back of the toilet while putting lotion on and watched it slip into the toilet bowl.
“I went to grab it, but I missed and it fell in,” Donna told the Billings Gazette. “It went right down into the little hole at the bottom of the toilet. I could put my finger in that hole and feel it with the tip of my finger, but it was wedged in tight.”

Claver and her husband did their best to get the ring free, draining the toilet, and then shaking, poking and prodding it, but nothing worked. They gave up, and several years later moved out of the small one bedroom house.
Story: Oh no! 13 real-life wedding disasters They stayed in Stanford and watched as the house went through several other owners, eventually ending up as a hunting cabin for a group from Florida.
“It always irritated me that we lost it,” Terry told the paper. “I always wanted to get it back. About five years ago the hunters asked me to go in the house and fix a bathroom faucet. I saw the toilet over there and I thought, ‘I ought to just take that toilet up to see if that ring is still down there.’ But I didn’t have time and it was somebody else’s house, so I didn’t.”

But a lucky break came just last month when Terry, fixing the roof of a building across the street from his first house, saw the hunters carrying out the old, now broken toilet, so they could replace it with a new one. Terry offered to throw the toilet away for them and they happily accepted.
“I put it in the back of my pickup and drove it into the shop,” he told the paper. “I got a sledgehammer, and I whacked it. The base of the toilet fell down on the truck’s end gate, and right in the center where the little hole would have been was the ring.”
Story: Couple's wedding rings lost, jeweler replaces them Terry excitedly called for his wife to join him in the shop. And that’s when she got a sight of the ring she thought she would never see again.
Holding it out on his pinky, Terry asked his wife of nearly four decades:
“Honey — will you marry me?”
The excited couple, who are now grandparents, laughed and cried, celebrating so many years after this symbol of their young love was lost.

Sometimes you think everything the other person does is cute, and other times you can’t stand to be around them. Finding the ring brought back the same original feelings we had when we were kids. It was a gift from God that made those feelings strong again.”
