Talbot Street, Dublin in the aftermath of the 1974 bombings

Victims of the Dublin and Monaghan bombings and their relatives have called on the British government to mark the Queen’s visit to Ireland by releasing secret files on the case.

The 1974 bombings killed 34 men, women and children and injured another 300 when loyalist paramilitaries brought death across the border.

The Queen will arrive in Dublin on the 37th anniversary of the bombings on Tuesday amid calls from survivors and victim support groups to open top secret British files on the events of 1974.

Ireland’s parliament is also to debate a Sinn Fein motion on Tuesday which repeats a 2008 all-party call on the British government to release all files on the Dublin and Monaghan bombings.

The Justice for the Forgotten group – which represents survivors and families of those affected by the Troubles – has already written to the Queen on the subject.

In their letter to Queen Elizabeth, the group has called on British Prime Minister David Cameron to ‘pursue the truth with vigor - make us all stronger - open up the files’.

The 2003 Barron report into the bombings ruled that they were carried out by loyalist paramilitaries but said there were grounds for suspicion that the bombers were aided by security forces in the North.

An Irish parliament committee report also suggested collusion between the bombers and British security forces on the ground in Northern Ireland.

In its letter, the Justice for the Forgotten group tells the Queen that her visit is a sign of improving relations between Ireland and England.

It adds: “We are appealing, through you, to your Prime Minister David Cameron, to mark the occasion of this historic visit by a genuinely significant gesture of reconciliation.”

The group has advertised its letter in the national press, and asked for donations from members of the Irish parliament to pay for it.

Fianna Fail and Sinn Fein deputies have already contributed and the group also expects donations from Labor party members.

16 dead, dozens injured as violence erupts along Israel's borders with Syria

By Daily Mail Reporter

Israeli troops today clashed with Arab protesters along three hostile borders, including the frontier with Syria, leaving 16 people dead and dozens more wounded in an unprecedented wave of demonstrations marking a Palestinian day of mourning for their defeat at Israel's hands in 1948.

Along Israel's border with Syria, thousands of protesters stormed the fence and hundreds burst through, pelting soldiers with stones, the military said. Soldiers guarding the border opened fire to stop them. Dozens were wounded and four were reported killed.

Israeli defence officials said the military had not expected protesters to try to breach the border and was caught by surprise.

Violence on Israel's borders

It was a rare incursion from the usually tightly controlled Syrian side, and Israeli officials accused Damascus of fomenting the violence in an attempt to divert attention from the deadly crackdown on protests within its borders against the rule of President Bashar Assad.

'The Syrian regime is intentionally attempting to divert international attention away from the brutal crackdown of their own citizens to incite against Israel,' said an Israeli military spokesman.

'Thousands of Syrian civilians breached the Israel-Syria border near the Israeli village of Majdal Shams.

'Israeli defence forces opened fire in order to prevent the violent rioters from illegally infiltrating Israeli territory. A number of rioters have infiltrated and are violently rioting in the village. From initial reports there are dozens of injured that are receiving medical care in a nearby hospital.'

In the deadliest incident, ten people were killed when they marched from inside Lebanon toward the border with Israel, according to Lebanese security officials. The Israeli military said troops opened fire when rioters attempted to break through the fence into Israel. Israeli defence officials also suggested the Lebanese army, which fired in the air to disperse the protesters, might have been responsible for some of the deaths.

Brigadier General Yoav Mordechai, an Israeli military spokesman, said soldiers fired when demonstrators began vandalising the border fence.

The army was 'aware' of casualties on the other side, he said.

The Israeli military said 13 soldiers were lightly wounded in the Lebanon and Syria clashes.

Today's unrest - which came after activists used Facebook and other websites to mobilize Palestinians and their supporters in neighbouring countries to march on the border with Israel - also marked the first time the protest tactics that have swept the Arab world in recent months have been directed at Israel.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he had ordered the military to act with 'maximum restraint'.

'But nobody should be mistaken. We are determined to defend our borders and sovereignty,' he added in a brief address broadcast live on Israeli TV stations.

By early evening, the Israeli military said the borders were quiet. Military jeeps and armoured vehicles could be seen leaving the area in the northern Golan Heights where the border was breached. Israel captured the strategic heights from Syria in the 1967 Mideast war.

The unrest came as the Palestinians marked the 'nakba', or 'catastrophe', the term they use to describe their defeat and displacement in the war at the time of Israel's founding in 1948.

Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were uprooted, and the dispute over the fate of the refugees and their descendants, now numbering several million, remains a key issue in the Mideast conflict.

It also comes at a critical time for U.S. Mideast policy. President Barack Obama's envoy to the region, George Mitchell, resigned on Friday, and the U.S. president may now have to re-think the administration's incremental approach to peacemaking. Obama is to deliver a Mideast policy speech in the coming week.

Syria has demanded the Golan Heights back as part of any peace deal, but the border has been quiet since the 1973 Mideast war despite hostility between the two countries.

A senior Israeli government official said: 'This appears to be a cynical and transparent act by the Syrian leadership to deliberately create a crisis on the border so as to distract attention from the very real problems that regime is facing at home.'

The protesters who came from the Syrian side were believed to be Palestinians who live in refugee camps in Syria. By late afternoon, Israeli military officials said about 100 people had been caught and were being sent back to Syria. It was not known how many remained on the loose.

'The residents are in shock, they had no idea this was going to happen,' Dolan Abu Salah, mayor of Majdal Shams, said. He said the town's residents, members of the Druse Arab sect, were neutral and did not want to get involved.

The clash with the Lebanese protesters occurred about 25 miles to the west. The shooting erupted at the tense border village of Maroun el-Rass, which saw some of the fiercest fighting in the month-long war Israel fought with Hezbollah in 2006. Thousands of Palestinian refugees had travelled to the village in buses adorned with posters that said: 'We are returning.'

Many came from the 12 crowded refugee camps in Lebanon where some 400,000 Palestinian refugees live.

Young Hezbollah supporters wearing yellow hats and carrying walkie-talkies organised the protesters and handed out Palestinian flags.

'Israel may be 63 years old today but its days are numbered,' said Abbas Jomaa, 50, who was carrying his four-year-old son on his shoulders and holding a Palestinian flag.

'Sooner or later we will return.'

In the Gaza Strip, Palestinian medics said one person was killed and 65 others were wounded when demonstrators tried to approach a heavily fortified border crossing into Israel.

A second Palestinian was killed in a separate incident. Israel's military said he was trying to plant a bomb along the fence.

In Jordan, police blocked a group of protesters trying to reach the border with Israel.

Inside Israel, police were on high alert for disturbances among the country's large Arab minority. In a reflection of the jitters, a deadly traffic incident involving an Arab truck driver in Tel Aviv set off fears that an attack had been carried out.

The truck ploughed through a crowded street, crashing into a bus, several cars and pedestrians, killing one and injuring 16 others. Police said the 22-year-old driver claimed it was an accident, but said they were still investigating.

'Based on the devastation and debris, we're still examining if it was carried out deliberately,' a police spokesman said.

'Huge security alert' closes area surrounding Buckingham Palace after police receive coded bomb warning

By Daily Mail Reporter

Last updated at 1:22 PM on 16th May 2011

The area surrounding Buckingham Palace was closed off today after Irish Republican dissidents issued a coded bomb warning.

The caller sparked a huge security alert in central London after claiming a device had been planted the day before the Queen is due to visit Dublin.

The threat that a bomb will go off today is not specific to time or place, Scotland Yard said.

Despite a huge investigation being launched, no device has yet been found. A controlled explosion was carried out on a suitcase abandoned outside a hotel and officers launched a search of the sewers.

Roads around St James Park, Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square were shut down as an investigation was carried out.

A search of the drains was launched after police discovered a manhole cover that had apparently been tampered with.

A painstaking search was launched around Admirality Arch after an officer spotted 'something suspicious' at 4.20amcthis morning.

A spokesman for Scotland Yard said: 'A bomb threat warning has been received relating to central London today. The threat is not specific in relation to location or time.

'The Metropolitan Police Service, City of London Police and British Transport Police are working closely together and all officers have been advised to be a highly vigilant to ensure the safety of London.'

The suitcase that was blown up outside a hotel was found at 9.30am this morning - although it was later revealed to be non-suspicious.

Traffic was prevented from driving down The Mall and around Trafalgar Square, as the huge operation was underway.

One officer guarding the cordon said: 'It's due to a huge security alert, but I can't say anything else.'

Another officer said there had been a 'suspicious package.'

At the Trafalgar Square end of The Mall, where cops were searching drains, and more than 10 emergency response, ambulances and police cars stood ready.

And officers patrolled the area on horses as concerned tourists were diverted through St James Park.

In Ireland, the largest security operation in the history of the Republic of Ireland is in place amid fears dissident Republicans will try to disrupt the momentous trip.

'The threat level from Irish-related terrorism has not increased and remains at substantial meaning that an attack is a strong possibility. The threat level was raised in September 2010 from moderate to substantial.

'This is lower than the overall threat to the UK from international terrorism which remains at severe.'

Armed British police officers will patrol Irish streets alongside thousands of gardai and soldiers to protect the 85-year-old monarch and the Duke of Edinburgh as they travel around the republic.

Security expert Crispin Black said the Queen's historic visit to Ireland has caused widespread anger amongst republican extremist groups.

Mr Black, a Sandhurst-trained Falklands veteran, said that the alert could have been extremists showing that they 'are still there.'

He said dissident Republicans had been left 'extremely angry' about the Queen's visit and added: 'It is their way of showing that they are in a position to make these visits more difficult.

'From what I have seen going on in Dublin it is going to be quite difficult to do anything there - it has been locked down.

'Maybe they decided that Dublin was too difficult so they decided to so something in London just to show that they are still there.'

Mr Black was reluctant to speculate about which group may have been behind the call, but added: 'It has always been a test of the IRA's English department.

'If you can take the British at their own headquarters that can give a status boost and have a greater impact than on home turf. I gather there were great concerns that something would happen around the Royal Wedding.

'But now with the Queen arriving in Ireland it would be an appropriate time if not to carry out an attack then just to show people that they are still there.

The threat today was not deemed serious enough for the Irish Republican terror threat to be increased.

A bomb warning has been received relating to central London, the Metropolitan Police has confirmed.

The force said the threat did not provide specifics about location or time.

The Mall and other central London streets were closed on Monday morning although a link has not been confirmed.

The warning is thought to be related to Irish dissident republicans but the threat level for Northern Ireland-related terrorism has not been changed.

The BBC understands the police received a coded bomb warning.

The police have told the public to continue going about their business but to be vigilant.

BBC security correspondent Gordon Corera said: "My understanding is that this may have come because of a coded warning, which is why there is more concern about it than normal. Threats come in and out all the time.

"But if it was a specific code word warning, that would suggest something more serious and that would be why we have had this alert."

He added it was significant that the threat level from dissident Irish terrorism had not been raised.

"Officials I have spoken to are trying to stress that it is not as if they have concrete intelligence of a specific attack at a particular time, or that would have gone up high in terms of the threat."

Earlier on Monday, The Mall and Carlton House Terrace were closed after a disturbed manhole cover sparked an alert.

Threat level

The Metropolitan Police have confirmed they are investigating a break-in at Carlton Gardens but could not confirm whether or not the incident was linked to the closure.

The building involved is believed to be 2 Carlton Gardens, which houses the Institute for Government think-tank.

That is adjacent to the foreign secretary's residence, where William Hague is believed to have been at the time.

BBC pictures from the scene show a van of search dogs, and the Met's underwater and confined spaces search team.

The current threat level from international terrorism for the UK is assessed as severe.

The threat level for Northern Ireland-related terrorism is set separately for Northern Ireland and Great Britain. In Northern Ireland it is severe and in Great Britain substantial.

Severe means that a terrorist attack is highly likely, substantial that an attack is a strong possibility.
