NASA's MISR Provides Unique Views of Gulf Oil Slick

Top: False-color image of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, created by combining data from different color bands on two of MISR's nine cameras. The oil is visible as different shades of cyan, while other features such as clouds and land appear close to their natural color. The Mississippi River Delta is visible in the upper left. Bottom: Two MISR camera views of a smoke plume believed to be from a controlled burn of oil on the ocean surface.

NASA Views Oil Spill From Terra Satellite

NASA's Terra satellite flew over the Gulf oil spill during its orbit on Saturday, May 22 at 17:00 UTC (1 p.m. EDT) and captured a visible image of the spill. The oil slick is located southeast of the Mississippi Delta and appears as a dull gray color. Some high clouds (white) float over the northern extent of the spill.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's web update on Sunday, May 23, said "Shoreline assessments and overflights continued today as planned. As anticipated, areas of oil moved closer to the Chandeleur Islands today. With winds forecast from the north, this will tend to push the oil away from shore. However, the threat of oil impacting the coastline remains high."

NASA's Terra Satellites Sees Spill on May 24

Sunlight illuminated the lingering oil slick off the Mississippi Delta on May 24, 2010. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this image the same day.

Oil smoothes the ocean surface, making the Sun’s reflection brighter near the centerline of the path of the satellite, and reducing the scattering of sunlight in other places. As a result, the oil slick is brighter than the surrounding water in some places (image center) and darker than the surrounding water in others (image lower right). The tip of the Mississippi Delta is surrounded by muddy water that appears light tan. Bright white ribbons of oil streak across this sediment-laden water.

Tendrils of oil extend to the north and east of the main body of the slick. A small, dark plume along the edge of the slick, not far from the original location of the Deepwater Horizon rig, indicates a possible controlled burn of oil on the ocean surface.

To the west of the bird’s-foot part of the delta, dark patches in the water may also be oil, but detecting a manmade oil slick in coastal areas can be even more complicated than detecting it in the open ocean.

When oil slicks are visible in satellite images, it is because they have changed how the water reflects light, either by making the Sun’s reflection brighter or by dampening the scattering of sunlight, which makes the oily area darker. In coastal areas, however, similar changes in reflectivity can occur from differences in salinity (fresh versus salt water) and from naturally produced oils from plants.

Apple's Fans Excited for Newly Launched iPad

CANBERRA, May 28 (Xinhua) -- About 230 Australian iPad fans, stretching three city blocks, have been lined up outside Sydney's Apple store on Friday morning to be among the first to purchase the touchscreen tablet computer, iPad.

In Sydney city, the crowd has reached fever pitch as the first customers crossed the threshold at 8 a.m. (AEST), while dozens of employees inside erupted into spontaneous applause to welcome the Apple fanatics.

An Apple spokesman in the Sydney's Central Business District store would not disclose how many iPads were currently available in Australia, but said numbers were limited.

The spokesman said iPads that had been ordered through the Apple website would be delivered from Friday.

Australians can buy one of two models of the iPad: the Wi-Fi or the Wi-Fi+3G, which allows for fast cellular phone network access when users were not within range of a Wi-Fi network.

Prices start at 629 Australian dollars (535.8 U.S. dollars) and go up to 1,049 dollars (893.6 U.S. dollars).

Friday was the first day the new technology was available outside the U.S., where Apple has sold one million iPads in the first 28 days.

The iPad is a tablet computer designed and marketed by Apple for Internet browsing, media consumption, gaming, and light content creation. Released in April 2010, it established a new class of devices between smart phones and laptops.

Sydney is the largest city in Australia and Oceania, and the state capital of New South Wales.

Obama Unveils Security Strategy

U.S. President Barack Obama on Thursday released his first National Security Strategy report, emphasizing the importance of using economic strength and diplomatic alliances alongside military power to keep the country safe and prosperous.

Obama's new strategy represents a clear break with the unilateral military approach, also known as pre-emptive strike policy, pursued by his predecessor George W. Bush through his eight-year presidency after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

"The United States remains the only nation able to project and sustain large-scale military operations over extended distances," said the document. But "when we overuse our military might, or fail to invest in or deploy complementary tools, or act without partners, then our military is overstretched. Americans bear a greater burden, and our leadership around the world is too narrowly identified with military forces."

In redefinition of security strategy, the document named economic strength as one of the top national security priorities.

"At the center of our efforts is a commitment to renew our economy, which serves as the wellspring of American power," said the document, issued at a time when the U.S. is struggling to recover from the worst recession since the 1930s.

The strategy defines four "enduring national interests" that are "inextricably linked": security, prosperity, values and international order.

U.S. president is required by law to present Congress with an annual strategic statement. But during his eight-year-presidency, George W. Bush only issued two national security strategies, in 2002 and 2006. And this is the first security doctrine prepared by Obama after he took office last January.

The document also highlighted the importance of ensuring strong alliances to keep the country safe.

"The foundation of United States, regional, and global security will remain America's relations with our allies, and our commitment to their security is unshakable. These relationships must be constantly cultivated, not just because they are indispensable for U.S. interests and national security objectives, but because they are fundamental to our collective security."

While maintaining the existing alliances, the new security doctrine called for expanding spheres of cooperation around the world.

"Certain bilateral relationships -- such as U.S. relations with China, India, and Russia -- will be critical to building broader cooperation on areas of mutual interest. And emerging powers in every region of the world are increasingly asserting themselves, raising opportunities for partnership for the United States."
